Memory project piece

Wow... this was a tough one. If you look back at my November 17th post, you will see the photograph that I received as part of The Memory Project from which I was to make an artwork. I admit to having "cheated" somewhat in that I made a color copy of the photo and used that as a template for this work. The challenge came from finding the palette of elements and making pieces that "looked good" as they were being placed on the substrate. I am pretty pleased with how this turned out. I hope that the child in Africa is pleased when he receives it. Enjoy!

The Black Gryphon in Elizabethtown, PA

I am part of a two-person exhibit at The Black Gryphon until the first of April and will be doing an event we're calling "Dinner & Collage" during which I will be demonstrating and helping everyone do a small collage after a wonderful dinner prepared by Anthony Morgan and his staff. Should be a good time. I couldn't resist posting this photo of my name on the "marquee". Enjoy!

another student collage

This collage was created in my collage class at Utica College last night by Ashley Goguen. I really like the way this one turned out. Nice depth, nice contrast and VERY nice use of various didactic interactions between the subjects in the composition. Nice job Ashley! Enjoy!

FIA300 - Collage

One of the reasons that I am grateful to have the job that I have as Professor of Psychology at Utica College is that I am able to pursue my personal interests in a way that serves the institution and the students. Over the last several years, my research focus has involved investigating the factors which influence how people perceive artwork. I have presented my findings at various conferences and have published the results in academic journals. This semester I have the amazingly good fortune of teaching a 1-credit Fine Arts course in collage! These pieces are from the first class in which students created a finished collage. These are all 4" x 6". I think they did a fantastic job!!! I jokingly said to the class, "Thanks, you guy. Now I don't feel so special anymore". I am looking forward to more good works from them. Enjoy!

two more

Although I had spent most of the day in my studio yesterday, I was a little disappointed in my productivity in terms of creating finished pieces. I had gotten a lot of organization and prep work done, but had only produced one piece by late afternoon. Last night I went down and decided to d at least one more piece. As it turns out, I did two. They both have an interesting palette and I am pleased with them. They are both 5" x 7" and I have yet to decide on a title for each. Enjoy!

Another day in the studio

I spent the better part of today in my studio (after shoveling the 12 inches of snow we got last night). I'm a little disappointed about my overall productivity today, but I think I was successful in getting some things organized and doing some detail cutting on some elements that I will use soon. I did complete a small 5" x 7" piece I've entitled "Skullduggery". I also saw the guy who does some of my matting and framing (haven't seen him since before the holidays). So here it is. Enjoy!
